Keep Yourself Healthy this World Immunization Week

It’s the last week of April, which means that World Immunization Week is here! Since vaccinations have been widely regarded as the most effective and efficient leap in modern medicine, it’s important to spread awareness of the positive effects of vaccines, and make sure you get yours on time. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of dangerous misinformation about vaccinations floating around, but World Immunization Week hopes to lead people on a healthier, safer path and prevent them from contracting dangerous pathogens.

During this week, the World Health Organization hopes to achieve this by highlighting the importance of immunization as a top global health investment priority, promoting understanding of the action steps required to achieve the Global Vaccine Action Plan, and showcase immunization’s role in sustainable development and global health security.

Vaccines are especially important for children and infants, as Dr. Vidya K. Narayanan, Specialist Pediatrician at Medeor 24×7 Hospital, Dubai, stated: “Infants and children are susceptible to infections due to their still immature immune system. Vaccinations have a crucial role in protecting them against such serious illnesses. Vaccines work by stimulating our active immune response, and as the system has memory, the response will protect immediately on exposure to the actual infection. Most vaccinations are clustered around the first 2 years of life as it is the critical period in which the infants need the protection most.”

And these vaccinations work incredibly well, as it’s estimated that over a billion lives have been saved due to widespread immunization. Without vaccines, we would still see the devastating effects of Polio, Smallpox, and other dangerous illnesses that have a drastic health effect. While we still occasionally come down with a seasonal cold, those are a lot safer and easier to deal with than an epidemic. To keep up your immunity, make sure to keep all your vaccinations up to date, to immunize your young children and pets, and stay informed about any dangerous viruses that start to make the rounds. Also, be sure to vaccinate if you’re travelling, and do your research on what might diseases you might be at risk for in those countries. Even if it seems unlikely you’ll contract them, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
