It is estimated that one in twelve people in the UAE are Thalassemia carriers. The disease, which often manifests itself in the form of anaemia due to low levels of red blood cells and haemoglobin, can be prevented through simple premarital tests. The campaign, also supported by the UAE Genetic Diseases Association is a nation-wide campaign that aims to educate the public about the disease and its prevention mechanisms.

A team from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Ministry of Environment and Water confiscated fifteen baboon monkeys and two striped hyenas, all endangered species, for being sold from a house in Khalidiya area, illegally and without proper documentation. A spokesman from the EAD said that the UAE is intensifying its fight against the illegal trade in endangered species and is implementing strict legal procedures to control this trade and penalize violators.

ECO VOICE

Make your kitchen a green environment.

• Use washable dish rags and dish towels instead of paper towels.
• Use bamboo as a cutting board as it is harder than most wood and is also much safer than plastic ones.
• Use more manual kitchen products like manual egg beaters, can openers, knives and other such items than using electric ones.
• Use Green Smart Cookware that is often made from petroleum free ceramics and other chemical free substances while staying non-stick.
• Try bamboo bowls as they are natural products and a great solution to having plastic mixing and serving bowls. Besides, they also look nice.
• Use more organic products such as organic spices and coco powders to cook or bake.
• Coffee drinkers should try going non-electric for coffee time by purchasing a coffee press.

HELPING HAND

This news comes from a person whose family has suffered three deaths to cancer within the last two years, including her father late last year.  She wanted to do something to help raise a bit of cash for a charity she feels passionate about. Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to research on the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer. They’ve got a variety of signed sports memorabilia which were recently auctioned on ebay.co.uk. By the time of reading this, the hammer on the auction will have gone down.  For those who have missed the auction held on 28th of May but want to help by making donations, which they appreciate and accept, mail Renee on chappers28@hotmail.com for more details.
