Cookie Crumbles

Our fondest memories of childhood would undoubtedly be the smell of freshly baked cookies when we come home from school. Did you know (and this is according to Wikipedia) that cookies originated in the 7th Century from Persia and spread to Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain? But how about the chocolate chip cookie? Did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was accidentally developed by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1930? Wakefield is said to have been making chocolate cookies and when she ran out of regular baker’s chocolate, instead used broken pieces of Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate, thinking that they would melt into the batter. But happily for us they didn’t, and so was the chocolate chip cookie born! Tempo sampled a few chocolate chip cookie variations, and this, my friends, is how the cookie crumbles…

Where: Eric Kayser
What: Chocolate Chip Cookie (with walnuts)
Comment: Eric Kayser does everything on a large scale and their cookies are no different. As soon as we ordered, a hot, ginormous cookie was served to us straight from the oven. This is not your crispy cookie but the more delicate, chewy cookie variety, with walnuts adding a perfect crunch.

Where: Mugg and Bean
What: Chocolate Chip Cookie
Comment: These are the “Cookie kings” with each order not just one cookie, but a set of three: Chocolate Chip cookie, M&M cookie, and finally  Gingerbreadman and Oatmeal Cookies. You can smell your order a mile away and your tastebuds are not disappointed. Browned to perfection, they are crisp, soft and have you saying a quiet prayer for the baker.

Where: Cinnabon
What: Chocolate Chip Cookie
Comment: Cinnabon aces cinnamon rolls, but they’re not quite as big on cookies. A little too soft to the bite – although the lavish use of chocolate chips are a definite saving grace.

Where: Subway
What: Chocolate Chip Cookie
Comment: The cookies at Subway aren’t meant to be the go-to menu item in the eatery, but they serve as a decent meal accompaniment for their subs. Though a little on the gooey side, they adequately serve their purpose.
