COP28: A Pledge For Global Sustainability

A personal journey of inspiration

By Aisha Ghassan Bagersh

My internship at COP28, in the high-security blue zone provided me with a unique point of view into Ethiopia’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Working at the Ethiopian Green Legacy pavilion, became an interesting experience, showing the nation’s efforts to fight climate change and build a greener future for its youth.

The pavilion was an example of Ethiopia’s approach to sustainability, showcasing not only achievements but also a calling to global action. The Ethiopian Green Legacy pavilion became a way for Ethiopia to present its accomplishment of planting 32.5 billion seedlings in the last five years. This reforestation effort displayed the commitment to concrete solutions and plans. It was a demonstration of Ethiopia’s attempt to fix the emerging climate crisis.

The pavilion presented Ethiopia’s strategic 10-year plan to shift from gas-powered public vehicles to electric ones. As I observed discussions among ambassadors and government representatives from the Horn of Africa, it became clear that Ethiopia was not just showing its achievements but also engaging in collaborative strategies for the region. The pavilion, inspired by sustainable cultural practices, offered a narrative that has been passed down from generations.

Each zone within the pavilion, from the introductory section showing Ethiopia’s success story to empowering the next generation in sustainable practices, The third zone focused on sustainable agriculture and revealed traditional practices and innovative solutions that are laying the foundation for Ethiopia’s fight against climate change.

Ethiopia’s green-powered revolution emphasised the sustainable use of natural resources. Mega-projects in water and energy, coupled with a commitment to clean power and waste management, underlined Ethiopia’s dedication to a comprehensive and sustainable development strategy.

Despite, Ethiopia’s achievements and plans, the pavilion reiterated the global nature of climate action. While Ethiopia positioned itself as a positive example, the overarching message was clear: mitigating climate change requires an effort from the global community to reduce CO2 emissions collectively.

Overall, my internship at COP28 allowed me to witness firsthand Ethiopia’s commitment to a sustainable and green future. The Green Legacy pavilion, with its visionary plans, concrete actions, and collaborative spirit, stands as a beacon of hope in the global fight against climate change. Ethiopia’s example serves as a reminder that while individual efforts are crucial, a collective commitment from the global community is imperative for a greener and more resilient future. The pavilion not only showcased Ethiopia’s accomplishments but served as a rallying point for global collaboration, emphasizing the interconnectedness of nations in the face of a shared environmental challenge.
