Fabric Love: Kera Thompson

When you take a look at fabric you would see a simple piece of material. Kera Thompson, an American designer based in the UAE, looks at fabric in an entirely different way, and has taken inspiration from the word ‘interwoven’ to launch stunningly beautiful products and an exciting online business.

“I created ‘Interwoven’ because fabric makes me happy. Whether it’s floor coverings, wall hangings, or the perfect cozy throw, textiles can tell far-off stories and breathe life and soul into your space,” she enthused.

Interwoven is an online boutique that sells artisanal home décor. Handmade by artists from around the world and handpicked by Thompson, the website features incredibly detailed rugs, cushions, quilts and throws that bear her hallmark   ‘global chic’.

“I believe in sourcing beautiful, exquisitely made pieces that each have their own story to tell. I believe in making every effort to ensure that your purchase is helping to empower the talented craftspeople, artisans, and designers I work with”.

The main goal of the company’s brand is to evoke the feeling of being interwoven as a world community. Thompson believes that “we can become more connected, and ultimately gain a love, respect, and appreciation for the unexpected beauty that is all around us”.

“From my travels and experiences as a designer, mother, and model, I have realized how interwoven we are as a world community, and cherish the beauty that comes as we become aware and embrace the good around us. Each piece in my collection is just a small reflection of that beauty”.

Thompson comes up with her ideas during her daily jogs. She said her high-spirited determination is a reflection of the many roles she has had in life, such as being a mother, wife, runner, and entrepreneur. She believes to have inherited her entrepreneurial spirit from her father and her creative and artistic skills from her mother.

“I go out of my way to really try to help my customers and clients understand who is making their quilt, or rug, or whatever, so that even though they may have never travelled to product’s place of origin, their purchase becomes a piece in their home with a story and a soul.

Thompson claims that her focus on fair trade makes Interwoven different from other high-end online shops. “Trading fairly is something that is extremely important to me, and I take care to make sure that every purchase that’s made on my site is helping to empower the people behind the products. I deal directly with small manufacturers and local families that produce, and as the business expands, I will continue increase my efforts in this capacity.”
