GROWING TINY FORESTS

A GLOBAL IDEA WORTH SPREADING!

“Myawaki Tiny Forests are fast growing highly dense mini forests which support biodiversity and local wildlife, lowering temperatures, harvesting rainwater, making soil nutritious, and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.

This is a proven method for reforesting degraded land, rain forests and fighting climate change and pollution in inner cities. In Pakistan, 50 sites have been chosen in Lahore to combat climate change by reducing temperatures and air pollution

The Miyawaki Method

The Miyawaki method is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki for quickly growing dense, native forests. Miyawaki was active worldwide as a specialist in the restoration of natural vegetation on degraded land planting over 40 million trees and advised projects in 1,700 locations. His process involves planting dozens of native species close together, on disturbed land, and allowing them to grow naturally without human intervention. The trees are planted close together to encourage faster growth as they compete for light. Miyawaki’s method helps recreate ecosystems that have been destroyed by human development.

The dense planting ensures that a mature, multilayered forest develops quickly – in 20-30 years instead of 200-500 years. Miyawaki forests are 30 times denser than conventional plantations. The technique has been used to regrow forests in Japan, Malaysia, France and many other countries. Over 1,000 Miyawaki forests have been planted around the world. The method requires extensive planning and site preparation but leads to diverse, resilient forests that support wildlife and require little maintenance after establishment. It offers an efficient way to restore native forests and their many ecological benefits.
