We studied this at TEMPO and identified a few specific directions, making FIFA 2022 a success for football fans, as well as environmentalists.

1.            Green Spaces

Qatar created many green spaces to increase cooling, oxygen levels, and natural pollutant scrubbers. The government planting thousands of shrubs, trees, and turf to create landscaping and nurseries around the stadium and training sites. They used recycled water to make 100% water resuse possible.

2.            Reduce Air Pollution

The government took action to mitigate air pollution for the millions of fans who were traveling to and fro between their stadium. They increased stops for the Doha metro and rerouted bus and tram routes to reduce traffic and car emission pollutants. This also involved reducing switching to 25% electric buses to reduce carbon emissions.

3.            Sustainable Buildings

The Qatari government took steps to ensure that the stadium and building provinces received top sustainability certifications to validate their results. This also included regulating dust pollution resulting from the construction of the stadium and improving ventilation, infrastructure, and waste management systems. Stadium air quality testing and greenhouse monitoring was put in place to ensure that the space was environmentally safe.

4. Waste Management System

Another step the government took is the proper disposal of trash accumulation from sports fans. It prepared recycling bins to offer timely collection, and to advocate for less plastic dependency.

5.            Energy Sustainability

The Qatar stadium utilized solar energy for powering stadium lights and parking lot lights to reduce energy dependency. It implemented green energy solutions not only at the stadiums but also at all its training sites.
