MILKSHAKE HEAVEN

SHAKE IT UP:

Once upon a time a milkshake was not the sweet, creamy drink that we know today. It was an alcoholic drink famous for its eggnog-like consistency, and it was used mainly as a tonic after dessert. Thankfully the milkshake has evolved into an innocuous drink that is the go-to energy drink for kids and grownups alike.  Tempo decided to indulge in the milkshakes around town…

Where: Baskin Robbins

What: Pralines and Cream Caramel Thick Shake
Build: Vanilla ice cream with praline-coated pecan and caramel ribbon, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
Comment: Baskin Robbins has a variety of milkshakes and they do not disappoint. This drink was creamy and full of texture; the crunch of the pralines teased out the nuttiness of the pecan giving it a smooth flavour. One thing is guaranteed with Baskin Robbins milkshakes – they may be loaded with calories, but they sure have a way of bringing a smile on your face.
Recommendation: Try a topping of waffles on your milkshakes for rich texturing.

Where: Baskin Robbins (yep we’re doing two of BR, sorry other guys)
What: Nutty Fudge Cream Cheese Brownie Shake
Build: Chocolate fudge ice cream swirled with cream cheese ribbons, walnuts and brownie chunks; deliciously accented with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
Comment: Ideal for chocolate lovers, this shake not only gives you a yummy chocolate drink but also doles out chewy chocolate brownie chunks. As if that’s not enough chocolate, cocoa sauce is drizzled on the top melting into the whipped cream to give a marbled finish that feeds both the eyes and the palate.
Recommendation: No one can change ice cream into milkshakes quite like Baskin Robbins; pure decadence all the way.

Where: Starbucks
What: Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino (milkshakey enough to qualify in this category)
Build: Fresh strawberries and cream blended together and topped with whipped cream.
Comment: This is one of Starbuck’s signature summer drinks and is quite famous for its 100 percent pure strawberry syrup. The freshness of milk combines nicely with the fruity flavour and the thick cream. May not be a gulp-it-down thirst quencher, but still quite perfect for sipping in our scorching summer heat.
Recommendation: Indulge in Starbucks’ “discover your own Frappuccino” experience which allows you to dabble with toppings of coffee and flavoured syrups.

Where: Costa
What: Raspberry and White Chocolate Cooler
Build: Raspberry swirl with creamy white chocolate.
Comment: Unlike other milkshakes we tried out, this one did not come with whipped cream topping, however the pungent smell of raspberries quickly helped us overcome that initial disappointment. Although the raspberry was strong it was the white chocolate and cream that dominated the flavour. This was a ‘cooler’ by name, and sure enough the swirling crushed ice had a soothing effect on our senses.
Recommendation: Try Costa’s new camel milk drinks, which are said to be high in nutrition and loaded with anti-ageing properties.
