Al Khayef
An Adaptation of George Buchner’s WOYZECK
‘Love and Loss at the bottom of the barrel’
Resuscitation Theatre, in association with The Goethe Institute and The Emirates Writers Union Abu Dhabi announce Al Khayef an ‘Arabicised’ adaptation of the classic German tragedy Woyzeck by George Büchner. The misused Al Khayef ekes out a miserable existence sweeping the streets and running errands for a bullying company executive. Acting as a human guinea pig for a local doctor with dubious credentials, he is put on a near starvation diet that effects his lucidity. When Al Khayef suspects his wife may have been unfaithful with his foreman he is thrust into a downward spiral of twisted redemption. This adaptation, which remains faithful to Büchner’s theme of dehumanization, is a both searing and comical insight into the layers of affluence and influence we create and perpetuate as a society.
