CULTURAL IFTAR 2014

1– 26 July 2014

SHEIKH MOHAMMED CENTRE FOR CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING, DUBAI

This is an opportunity to experience Iftar and learn more about Islamic traditions. The evening begins with the Athan (the call to prayer) followed by the breaking of the fast with the Emirati hosts and some Arabic coffee and dates. You can observe the hosts pray, then Iftar is served. During Iftar, visitors are invited to ask any questions they may have about Ramadan and the culture or the traditions of the UAE. After Iftar, you can join the hosts for a visit of the Diwan Masjid, before returning to the centre for dessert and tea. The gathering for the Iftar events will begin about 15 minutes before the call to prayer every evening from Tuesday the 1st of July until Saturday the 26th of July. Children under 12 attend for free.

WORLD FOOTBALL CELEBRATIONS

For those wanting to follow all the live action in Brazil with family and friends – this is the place. Organisers say that is the emirate’s largest FIFA World Cup viewing venue, complete with fully-themed fan and heritage zones and an indoor bazaar with separate areas for ladies, families and football fans. For those fasting during Ramadan, du Forum will host Suhour and serve as a hub for Holy Month festivities, with prayer areas.

A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 100 OBJECTS

1 July – 1 August 2014

MANARAT AL SAADIYAT, ABU DHABI

This exhibit, which opened in April, is the third in a major exhibition series leading up to the 2016 opening of the Zayed National Museum. Discover a hundred of the world’s most historically compelling objects capturing the world’s history and, within it, the Middle East’s significant role. Held in collaboration with the British Museum, this is the first time the popular BBC series has been shown as an exhibition. Visitors are invited to travel back in time and across the globe to discover a history of humanity. The exhibition will run for 100 days with a full, associated public programme of workshops, tours and seminars.

RESUSCITATION THEATRE: PLAY-READING SESSIONS

Emirates Writers Union Auditorium, The National Theatre

Every Wednesday evening Resuscitation Theatre will hold Play-Reading sessions to explore new plays by the award winning Emirati Playwright, Salah Karama. Sessions will include both reading and practical work from the text. Three different plays will be examined throughout the 8 week course (first session held on June 25th). A voluntary contribution of Dh 200 for the 8 week programme can be made, or Dh 50 per session for ‘drop ins’. These are flexible sessions, so there is no need to commit to all of them.

YESTOWORK INITIATIVE– SUMMER 2014

VARIOUS VENUES ACROSS UAE

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, this initiative is held each summer and winter during the school breaks. The third ‘YES to Work’ will engage 800 students and 15 partners in 150 different work locations in Abu Dhabi, Western Region, Al Ain and Dubai. The four-week programme provides students with the chance to gain professional experience in a real work environment and acquire specific knowledge by attending a course in retail services.

FREEJ LIVE: ABOOD’S DREAM

“Freej Live: Abood’s Dream” is an all new, locally produced stage show running as part of Abu Dhabi Summer Season. Based on the popular animated TV series, the full length show features the hilarious antics of hero character Abood who embarks on a fantasy adventure, whilst looking after one of the grandmother’s pets, a canary – a bird that lives in a fish bowl. Along the way he meets new friends and learns new lessons. The stage show Abood’s Dream is a fun filled traditional family theater experience with a local cultural twist.
