Tempo writer and award-winning poet, Paul D, sat down with photographer James Simmons of JS Photography to discusses the passion for picture-taking in the UAE…
Paul D: Tell us about your background and how you got into photography.
James: I was born in the United States, in Mississippi to be exact, but I consider Atlanta, Georgia, home because I moved there when I was four. I have been in the UAE for two years now. I was at university when I first began to take interest in photography, and that is when I bought my first digital camera, the Canon Powershot SD 700. I was a Canon fan back in the day. That camera went everywhere with me. It’s kind of ironic now because I’m a Nikon fan now. I guess we evolve with age.
Paul D: You encouraged me to get a Canon for my trip to South Africa last summer and now you just up and switch brands on me?! What was the catalyst that got you in to photography? Was
there a specific picture?
James: Since buying my first camera, I developed an interest in traveling and taking pictures. I can’t say that it was a specific picture that was the ‘catalyst’ but rather an album of pictures I put together for my family after my return from the Serengeti. I was proud of that album and that’s when I knew my hobby had transformed into a passion.
Paul D: You do amazing work as the official photographer for our Rooftop Rhythms poetry show. What do you think stands out about your pictures over an average picture taken by someone else?
James: That’s a major compliment and I appreciate all the love Rooftop Rhythms supporters show when the pictures are displayed on Facebook. I go into every show with the mindset that I’m going to capture the atmosphere and mood of the show. It’s actually a great event to photograph because the atmosphere is electric and people are social and happy. Paul D, as the creator/MC of Rooftop Rhythms, how is it that you succeed in creating that electric atmosphere?
Paul D: I try to facilitate a unique cultural experience through great location, music and creative performance poetry. A diverse crowd that is comfortable and feels appreciated will also organically help to produce that excitement you feel. How would you recommend a young photography enthusiast get started?
James: The best advice I could give would be to have fun and be excited to learn new things every time you pick up your camera. Don’t concern yourself with the quality of your equipment or trying to get the perfect picture. Sometimes the best pictures come from just having fun.
Paul D: What is your favourite location in the UAE to take pictures?
James: There are so many great places to take pictures in the UAE, but if I had to pick my favourite it would have to be Hatta, because of its desert, mountains, and Bedouin villages. There is culture, interesting people, and scenery at every turn.
Paul D: Tell us more about JS Photography and how you can be contacted.
James: JS Photography was never the plan I envisioned. I just had a passion for photography and love the art of capturing the moment. My goal at every photo shoot or event is to capture the look or atmosphere while having a good time. You can see my work at www.jamessimmonsphotography.com or my Facebook page JS Photography.
