CONSERVE HERITAGE

ADACH was represented with the paper presentation titled ‘Master Planning for Heritage Conservation in Al Ain Oasis, UAE’, made by Ege Yildirim, Heritage Planner at the ADACH Strategic Planning and Development Department.

As a rich case study of heritage planning practice in Abu Dhabi, the Al Ain Oasis Cultural Quarter Master Plan (AAOCQMP) was presented within the Workshop on ‘The impact of spatial planning, urban design and built form on urban sustainability’. The paper focused on the AAOCQMP, but also used this theme as a medium for discussing more general issues of heritage planning encountered while implementing the ADACH mission and strategies.

The theme of the 46th ISOCARP Congress was Sustainable City – Developing World, where delegates explored the roles of spatial planning and urban design for sustainability; tensions between environmental sustainability, economic efficiency and social equity. Five big ideas were identified for achieving sustainable cities, defined as Integration; Resilience; Economic growth; Dialogue with Traditional urban design and built form; and finally Flexibility and Adaptability of planning instruments.

ISOCARP is a global association of experienced professional planners. It was founded in 1965 in a bid to bring together recognized and highly-qualified planners in an international network.
