Celebrities go green

Many international and local identities are publicly voicing their concerns over the environment. Tempo’s Emma Kirkman looks at some who are doing more than just talking.

Whether you like it or not, in today’s celebrity-driven culture that we live in, stars often hold a huge amount of power in raising awareness of issues. The environment and sustainability is no different, with many celebrities throwing their weight and name behind various campaigns. Some celebrities just do it for the publicity but Leonardo DiCaprio and James Cameron are two who follow through on their pledges to help fight climate change….and each have a link to the UAE.

GLOBAL WARMING

In February 2012, Abu Dhabi unveiled a new utility bill for water and electricity that provides customers with more information on their usage:  such as what the government subsidises, along with an indication of whether usage was within the ideal (green), or greater than the ideal (red).  This is a radically innovative idea to ‘nudge’ people out of their complacency and ‘empower’ them (yes, empower them) into making the right decisions.

A new breed of eco-superheroes has come to help save our world! The Planetarians is a new CSR initiative, supported by BrandMoxie and other like-minded businesses, to focus corporates and the community on the preciousness of our finite global resources.

 

A DROP OF WATER

 

 

Hayat, meaning “Life” in Arabic, is a project initiated by a group of people who wish to renew the reforestation actions undertaken by the late H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.  Their dream is to breathe green life into a desert patch in Al Wathba. The goal of this initiative is to protect the biodiversity of the UAE and teach the public about it by experiencing it firsthand. Tempo sits down with Celine Delabie, the Project Coordinator, who shared the dream.
