E3 for Everyone: Entwined, No Man’s Sky

Yes the year’s gaming centrepiece was last month, but it never really brought any major surprises. It did, however, continue to tease some of the most anticipated joints like The Order: 1886 and confirmed the Uncharted 4 rumour. Both trailers are sufficiently impressive, the latter stirring up more questions than answers. The positive is that there were new titles rather than sequels; the negative is Xbox titles didn’t seem to feature highly.

Some of the more intriguing games include the experimental Entwined, the spiritual adventure Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and the open world Sci-fi No Man’s Sky.

Entwined is a product of game development students, and is an abstract game where you play two characters, a fish and a bird, in unrequited love. The game play is a series of gradually more difficult challenges that seem to be more about agility and coordination than anything else, as you guide the coloured shapes that are our star-crossed love birds…or love fish? The attraction to this one is its experimental nature. It’s out now on PS4.

Everybody’s Gone to Rapture is set in England post an apocalyptic event that seems less violent and chaotic than the usual. This first-person adventure allows you to follow the story of six characters who try to unravel the mystery of the events (we assume the disappearance of ‘everybody’). Its visuals are spectacular and is ‘non-linear with a dynamic and adaptive environment’ story-driven, with a focus on the emotional journey rather than gameplay. From indie developer The Chinese Room, it is due out next year on PS4.

No Man’s Sky features ‘procedurally generated open universe’ where anything goes. I think that means it’s awesome. This first-person Sci-fi adventure is all about space exploration, interplanetary travel and discovery and anything else you want it to be. There are no enemies except the environment itself – like a giant raging dinosaur-type creature or a space battle that has nothing to do with you. The universe is apparently massive, true to scale and very random – like real life. For Playstation 4 there was no release date at time of printing.
