If you’re not familiar with The Room, you’re missing out on a clever, creepy and intriguing physical puzzler. The Room, released last year, won a few game of the year awards with good reason. It’s a puzzler wrapped in a mystery that makes full use of the iOS touchscreen interface while challenging your competitive side.
You follow the trail of an alchemist as he searches for the secrets of ultimate power through something called the ‘null element’. All the action takes place in a single room (hence the title) and you follow clues and solve interesting puzzles to essentially unravel the fate of the Alchemist – a fate you may share. The puzzles, which revolve around an enigmatic and complicated table, can be three-dimensional, cleverly hidden compartments or mini-games. You have tools to help you along the way and paying attention to seemingly innocuous details is very important.
The first instalment ends on a cliff-hanger, of course, and the latest update – The Epilogue – can be downloaded right now. A very short add-on, it’s the perfect teaser for the upcoming Room 2. The epilogue features a small box on a table (sounds simple, but it’s not) and is just as inventive and intriguing as ever, if not a little easy to solve. But that could just be my awesomeness at work.
Download the update, it’s for free, and keep an eye out for The Room 2 later this year (no date announced at time of writing).
Game on.
