Youth Speak: National Potato Month

You might not know this but this September, we celebrate one of the world’s most popular food items: The Potato! With National Potato Month, we asked the Tempo Intern Team and their friends…

It depends on my mood really- sometimes I prefer them fried, sometimes I prefer them mashed. But as long as they’re plenty, I’m fine.

I like to eat potatoes in the form of fries because that’s like my favourite thing and you can have it at any time of the day- and with ketchup and garlic sauce of course!

I like to have my potatoes in the shape of French fries and wedges. But with ketchup and mayonnaise! But they have to be next to the fries, not on them. It’s way better that way and putting them on your fries is just a no.

Don’t kill me but, I don’t like potatoes. And since I do not like potatoes, I would like to show kindness and spare them. And help someone else who is in need of a potato – to enjoy that potato that I do not want to indulge in.

Although regular potatoes are a more savory and starchy substance, I would prefer sweet potatoes to that any day due to its sweet and vibrant flavours and of course it’s ample health benefits. I often cook my sweet potatoes by slicing them thinly (WITH THE SKIN OF COURSE) and placing them on a tray of pink Himalayan salt and extra virgin olive oil. Then I would bake them in the oven for about 30 to 40 minutes into fries (BUT A HEALTHIER VERSION), dip them in homemade English honey mustard and devour the entire tray!

If I were asked what is the one food i could live on without getting bored, it would without a doubt be potatoes. There are so many way they can be prepared and each one is as if not more delicious than the other. Since the question is to choose one of those ways, mine would most definitely be potatoes roasted in the oven with minced garlic cloves, extra virgin olive oil, garnished with parsley and fresh herbs, and drizzled in lemon. After one hour in the oven top the roasted potatoes with salt and black pepper. Finally your healthy garlic herb roasted potatoes are ready to be devoured!

Personally, I love sweet potatoes instead of regular ones. And crisps- not wedges! But I also love mashed potatoes and baked potatoes- those are amazing… I’m getting hungry just talking about this… Oh and can I just say that whoever declared September as national potato month; you’re doing it right.
