Hasta Luego

Carly Simon once sang about Warren Beatty, “You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you, you’re so vain…”

I would like to dedicate this month’s space to a dear friend of the emergency room, who has recently left us to pursue “better pastures”. Lets call this individual “Pat”.

Pat was a staff member who I had the honor of working alongside for the past several years. (S)he was a staple and admired by many for her/his dedication and academic prowess.

Always on time, dressed immaculately and ready for business, Pat was confident in all situations and slick with critical dying patients. A chosen leader for the trainee staff, Pat is one who probably left quite a memorable impression on them.

I never had the chance to say goodbye, but if I did, this is how it may have gone…..

Although you possess fantastic nursing skills, I suspect that your malignant personality will definitely outshine any talent you possess. Good luck with that.

Ah, the memories….. So many of them, I could go on for ages about Pat, but the bottom line is that I am glad to see the back of you. I hope that you spread your transparent disingenuous demeanor to others, that you have so proudly bestowed upon me, my colleagues, some of your own colleagues and patients alike. Your sarcastic smile and readiness to be rude will not be missed.

It is a pleasure to know that soon you will be sharing these positive personality traits with others in an environment where such behaviors generally have a zero tolerance policy and where patients are not in the least afraid to speak their minds.

Vaya con dios, I see a bright future ahead.

PS- Dear Reader, I’m just fooling, it’s just a simple love letter to hospital life.
