Spicy Soups!

Soup has always been a great go-to comfort food when we are down with flu. But soup is so much more than that – it is a ‘health food’, a ‘diet food’ and a delicious snack! Come to think of it soup is so versatile, healthy and easy to make, it deserves more of our respect! And that’s precisely why we pay it homage here…

Where: Kawloon
What:
Hot & Spicy Prawns Soup

Build: Hot and spicy clear soup with prawns, green chillies, chilli flakes and ginger.

Comment: The soup delivered fully on its namesake – very hot and very spicy – a little too hot for human consumption. It didn’t register too high on the ‘comforting’ metre. The prawns were yummy and redeemed the soup somewhat, but the soup tasted a tad too corn-starchy and too salty. Thank God for the generous amount of prawns! And yes, the strands of ginger, green chillies and chilli flakes helped to deliver a decent dose of zing.

Recommendation: You have a choice of clear or creamy soups, both in vegetarian and non-veg options.

Where: Thai Express
What:
Tom Yam Kai Soup

Build: Spicy Thai herbal soup with chicken.

Comment: If you’re looking for noodles in this soup, you won’t find them.  The soup had chunks of tomatoes and lots of mushrooms, lemon grass, galangal and basil. The herbs were well incorporated and had the traditional Tom Yam flavor. However, the soup was a little too sour for my taste buds; possibly due to the large amount of tomatoes in it?

Recommendation: Thai express don’t offer the variety of soups one usually expects in a restaurant of this type. Adequate at best.

Where: The Noodle House
What:
Baksu

Build: Beef broth with spiced meatballs, shredded cabbage and egg noodles.

Comment: The soup was more like a beef broth. Very clear soup with beef meatballs (those were yummy!) and egg noodles. Except for the meatballs, the soup felt more like a beef bouillon cube dissolved in hot water. An extra dash of pepper and salt helped a lot but not enough to make a real difference.

Recommendation: Going to The Noodle House for soup isn’t worth it (because of the relatively high cost), best use your cash for other dishes worth trying.
